What can be said about Steve Kasper's Addis Ababa? It's a great, fast-paced, heart-pounding thriller set in Ethiopia focused on physician-protagonist Dr. Isaac Porter who's equal parts Indiana Jones and Sherlock Holmes, cowboy and scientist. The book does a wonderful job of balancing all the strong points of the genre--romance, mystery, action, and plot twists--and is written by someone who clearly has done his research. From descriptions of embassy operations (including the agency that shall not be named) to food science, this book has it all. It pays homage to the classics without being predictable, familiar enough to sucker you in before it knocks you out. It's also a great length for the perfect weekend read, which is good news because it's a serious page-turner. My schedule doesn't leave much time for free reading, but this book did not leave my hands until the story was finished.I highly recommend this novel to any fans of the genre, and promise that you will not be disappointed. It holds its own against the greats.

Addis Ababa Steve Kasper 9780989602501 Books Reviews
I'm not one of those people that can just sit and read for hours, but Addis Ababa was hard to put down! If you're looking for a thriller sprinkled with wit in all the right places, you've landed on the right book. Dr. Kasper engulfs the reader in this suspenseful international medical mystery! Not only was it entertaining, but also medically accurate...which I can attest to as I, myself, am a medical student. Bit of advice don't read this before going to bed because you're not going to want to stop reading!
This book is great if you're going on a 4-5 hr airplane ride--you won't want to put it down, and it can be easily finished within that time! Kasper brings an exciting twist to the life of a doctor--the book is full of everything you'd ever want in a novel adventure, mystery, romance, and entertainment. At it's heart, the book is written for those looking embark on a journey of solving multiple layers of problems and questions. It isn't overwhelmingly confusing with medical and governmental jargon, making this great for any reader. The end of the story leaves you hungry for Kasper's next Isaac Porter book!
If you're looking for an exciting and thrilling escape into a world full of mystery, then look no further, because Isaac Porter's adventures will entertain you and leave you wanting more! Steve Kasper spends time developing his protagonist, Dr. Porter, so that when he's plunged into tragedy you're immediately invested in his quest to find the perpetrator. Read along and accompany Dr. Porter on his forays into mayhem, violence, lust, intrigue and suspense. I could not put the book down and have been waiting patiently for Steve Kasper to provide us with another gripping tale involving the witty Dr. Porter.
Addis Ababa is such a fun and interesting read! I love the unique personalities of all of the characters as well as the novelty of the mystery taking place at the US embassy in Ethiopa; it's definitely different from any book I've read previously. The story is also a good one - I didn't want to put it down! By the end, I wanted more and was dying to know how the relationships play out as well as the future mysteries Dr Porter will find himself involved in. I gave it to my dad to read once I finished it, and he was equally as excited and impressed. We both can't wait to see what Kasper writes next! Definitely hoping for another Isaac Porter mystery in the near future =)
From its opening sentence (“I lost my wife on 9/11”), Steve Kasper’s “Addis Ababa” sets off at a fast pace and never slackens. The quick-read short chapters are rich with plot twists and turns and an intriguing cast of suspect characters. Kasper’s whodunit puzzle is skillfully wrought, with the cumulative tension and suspense leading to a rewarding climax and satisfying denouement. But what really lifts “Addis” above the level of mystery genre competence are its quirky, brilliant protagonist and its unique and exotic setting. Dr. Isaac Porter, on his first foreign service assignment to the U.S. Embassy in the Ethiopian capital, makes a most unlikely Sherlock. Indeed, Porter serves the story as both Sherlock and Watson, alternating between brilliant deductions and stumblebum pratfalls, providing comic relief to his own heroic interventions. On arrival at Addis, the good doctor is plunged into a series of mysteries—food poisoning, sniper fire (obviously directed at him), threatening letters and text messages, even the fire-bombing of his home. Yet the real conflict—both frightening and funny, and skillfully drawn by Kasper—takes place in the daily closed door crisis meetings of Embassy personnel. In every such gathering, usually called after Porter has made another significant discovery by his own unorthodox methods, our hero is verbally attacked by his State Department superiors for not being a “team player” and following proper protocol in investigating these deadly events. I was several times reminded of the harrumphing and hyperventilating of the Scotland Yarders Lestrade and Gregson at the brilliant antics of another non-team player, Sherlock Holmes. Like Holmes, Porter is not only an original thinker but a master of deadpan wit, both qualities which endear him to the reader, if not to his diplomatic colleagues. A thoroughly satisfying mystery that may help explain the kind of institutional CYA bungling that led to Benghazi and its aftermath.
I enjoyed this story- it is full of plot twists to surprise you and won't disappoint.
I thoroughly enjoyed Addis Ababa! This wonderful book is filled with suspense, mystery, drama, love, travel and adventure. Steve Kasper has created a new world for us to explore with his vivid writing. I highly recommended this book to my book club. This is the perfect book to escape into and try to solve the mystery while experiencing another part of the world at the same time!
Enjoy!
